At home
A Level 2 charger is typically a 40 to 60 amp circuit — a serious load on a panel that may already be full. We run the load calculation first. Sometimes the answer is a straightforward circuit. Sometimes it is a sub-panel, a load-management device, or a service upgrade. You will know which before you spend anything.

Commercial, multifamily and fleet
This is now code-driven work, not optional. The 2025 CALGreen cycle took effect January 1, 2026 and it scales EV requirements by lot size — for a 10 to 25 space lot, four EV-capable spaces total, two of which must be built out as working charging stations, or three for office and retail. Multifamily needs every assigned space EV-ready plus Level 2 chargers on a quarter of additional common parking. Hotels need 40 percent EV-ready.
The part most owners miss: it triggers on alterations. Adding parking, putting solar over the spaces, or any electrical work that requires trenching pulls the requirement in. Restriping alone does not.
An honest word about incentives
The federal 30C credit for charging equipment expired June 30, 2026. Any contractor still quoting you "30 percent up to $100,000 per port" is quoting a dead program. Utility and state programs do still exist and do still change — we will check what is genuinely open when you are ready to build, and tell you if the answer is nothing.
